"I move, therefore I am." That could have been the mantra of the 20th-century urban dweller, when the car, the train and the underground gave us unprecedented freedom to journey around our cities. But increased mobility has also brought congestion, high emissions and poor air quality. Mega-cities such as Los Angeles and São Paulo are becoming gridlocked and road speeds in London are approximately the same as they were a century ago - 11 miles per hour. We need smart, deliverable solutions, but what form will these take? Will they be rapid transit systems, whizzing us around our cities in pods to save on time and energy? Will driverless cars do the thinking for us and reduce congestion? Or does the answer lie in simpler, low-tech ideas such as 'shared space' where - counterintuitively - road safety and vehicle flows are improved by ditching traffic controls? Will the very concept of buying a car become out-dated as consumers switch to renting the transportation services they need for each particular journey? How will we be getting around London in the mid-21st century? In this event from our Switched On series in partnership with Shell, Intelligence Squared brought together five of the world's most brilliant innovators and thinkers to debate and discuss what a world of smarter mobility could look like.
