WATCH: Sen. McConnell’s full statement on Trump’s impeachment trial |Trump’s first impeachment trial
Episode details
Episode description
Trump's first impeachment - 2020 Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said he would reject the “incoherent case” brought forth against the president by House managers, saying that “this partisan impeachment will end today.” He called the case “a symptom” of a much deeper pattern of considering the presidency to be illegitimate under Trump. McConnell accused House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of refusing to accept the forthcoming Senate acquittal, saying “perhaps she will tear up the verdict like she tore up the State of the Union address.” Senators weighed in Feb. 5 on whether they planned to vote to remove President Donald Trump from office later that same day. After the Senate voted last week to bar new witness testimony and subpoenas for documents, Trump’s acquittal has seemed all but assured. The House of Representatives impeached Trump in December on two articles of impeachment--abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.
