Episode description

Trump's first impeachment - 2020 Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., said that acquitting President Donald Trump would be a dangerous move, saying it would absolve a president “who continues to invite brazen interference into our elections.” Durbin said an acquittal will further leave the views espoused by Trump’s lawyer Alan Dershowitz unchallenged, namely his claim that a quid pro quo or anything else the president does is not impeachable as long as he does it in the interest of getting reelected. “Mr. Dershowitz has created an escape clause...that is breathtaking in its impact,” Durbin said. Senators weighed in Feb. 5 on whether they planned to vote to remove Trump from office later that same day. After the Senate voted last week to bar new witness testimony and subpoenas for documents, Trump’s acquittal has seemed all but assured. The House of Representatives impeached Trump in December on two articles of impeachment--abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.
