WATCH: Rep. Schiff’s full statement ahead of impeachment vote | Trump’s first impeachment
Episode details
Episode description
Trump's first impeachment - 2020 Rep. Adam Schiff, the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, argued on the floor of the House of Representatives that President Donald Trump abused the power of his office and should be impeached. Schiff’s remarks came during a day of debate on the articles of impeachment against Trump on Dec. 18, ahead of the full House impeachment vote later in the day. Schiff recounted all of the evidence his committee compiled in the case for impeachment against Trump, centering on a July 25 phone call between the U.S. president and the president of Ukraine. Trump “doesn’t care about Ukraine, or the impact on our national security,” Schiff said, “all that matters to this president is what affects him personally.” The two articles of impeachment charge Trump with abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. If passed, the process will then head for a trial in the Senate, where Republicans have a majority. “Our democracy is at peril,” Schiff said, adding that impeachment is the “remedy.” For more on who’s who in the Trump impeachment inquiry, read: https://www.pbs.org/newshour/politics/whos-who-in-the-trump-impeachment-inquiry Stream your PBS favorites with the PBS app: https://to.pbs.org/2Jb8twG Find more from PBS NewsHour at https://www.pbs.org/newshour Subscribe to our YouTube channel: https://bit.ly/2HfsCD6 Follow us: Facebook: http://www.pbs.org/newshour Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/newshour Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/newshour Snapchat: @pbsnews Subscribe: PBS NewsHour podcasts: https://www.pbs.org/newshour/podcasts Newsletters: https://www.pbs.org/newshour/subscribe
