The standard narrative says AI will replace knowledge work. The reality is more interesting: AI is reshaping knowledge work into something that looks more like editing.
For two decades, knowledge work has been about production. You wrote the report. You drafted the analysis. You built the slide deck. The bottleneck was your individual output. AI removes that bottleneck almost entirely. A first draft of anything is now seconds away.
What changes
The bottleneck moves. It moves from production to judgment. Which draft is right? Which framing matters most? Which fact needs verification? Which human reader actually needs this artifact, and what are they trying to decide?
The new core skills are editorial: framing, prioritization, fact-checking, orchestration of AI tools, and knowing when to ignore the AI entirely. People who lean into these skills will compound their value. People who try to keep doing what they did before — only with AI assistance — will find themselves slowly squeezed out by AI-native colleagues.
