Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever warned that the debate over ETS2 is far from over, even though the system itself has already been agreed. “It has been decided. It’s on the road. It’s coming.” De Wever said the current draft calls for examining “all aspects” of ETS2 — wording he described as deliberately broad. “All is all.” He said the concern is about the market conditions under which ETS2 will become operational and the impact it could have on household energy bills. De Wever pointed to Belgium, where he said households are paying around 70% more for gas than at the beginning of the year, equivalent to roughly €100 more per month for a household. “You can imagine that if ETS2 comes on top of that, that’s also a double dip.” He compared the situation with the pressure already facing European industry and warned that the same kind of downward trend could emerge in household purchasing power. De Wever also used a striking political metaphor, saying some leaders fear public anger if European climate policy pushes energy bills even higher. “Maybe more people could come out with forks if they are hit with an increase in their energy bill by European policy.” He said once governments examine the projected impact on every household, a new debate could begin over whether ETS2 should proceed exactly as planned or whether alleviating measures are needed. “Are we really going to do this? Are we going to do this now?” De Wever argued that this could become a similar debate to ETS1, where policymakers are already discussing measures aimed at reducing pressure on European industry. But ETS2, he stressed, is even more politically sensitive. “ETS2 weighs not on industry but on households.” #eudebates #BartDeWever #ETS2 #EnergyPrices
