Closing Loops - material reuse in construction
A pilot project in circular construction, Closing Loops explores how reclaimed materials from demolition sites can be used to create high-quality architecture. With the exception of the foundations, nearly all building materials are sourced through reuse, supporting ambitious circular economy goals.
The project was initiated by Aalto University and the City of Helsinki, following a student competition won by Johanna Saarela and Markus Saarela. Aalto University led both the design and research work, with contributions from Assistant Professor Antti Lehto and architect Havu Järvelä, offering valuable insights into circular design, material reuse, and material flows in construction.
