On 9 October 2026, Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security as well as Interinstitutional Relations and Transparency, Maroš Šefčovič, held a press conference while visiting Beijing, China for the second meeting of the EU-China Trade and Investment Consultations.
Commissioner Šefčovič said his Beijing visit was aimed at starting to rebalance the EU-China trade relationship and securing concrete first results through the Trade and Investment Consultations. He highlighted three provisional understandings: moderating Chinese exports of hybrids and plug-in hybrids to the EU, improving market access for several EU products in China through lower tariffs, and facilitating Chinese export licensing for rare earths and permanent magnets. He stressed that this is only an initial step, that the EU expects results from dialogue, and that if talks do not deliver enough, the EU is prepared to use its trade tools while further discussions continue in the coming months.
