Irish Taoiseach Micheál Martin used his address to the 81st United Nations General Assembly to deliver a powerful warning on Gaza, Ukraine, Sudan and the growing pressure on international law. “The answer to a world under strain is not less international cooperation. It is more.” Martin argued that weakening international institutions must not become an excuse to abandon multilateralism, but rather a reason to strengthen it. His strongest remarks focused on Gaza and the Palestinian question. “We, the international community, have failed Palestine.” Martin said Israeli strikes continue, humanitarian aid remains blocked and civilians continue to suffer despite diplomatic efforts to end the conflict. Ireland reaffirmed its support for a Palestinian state living alongside Israel in peace, security and dignity. But Martin warned that time for a two-state solution is running out. “What we are witnessing on the ground is a deliberate attempt by some to make the prospect of a two-state solution impossible.” He strongly criticized settlement expansion in the West Bank and said Palestinian communities are facing displacement, destruction and violence. Martin described the situation in Gaza as “an affront to all that is decent.” Then came one of the most powerful lines of his speech: “When the full truth of what has happened, what is still happening in Gaza, is finally known... it will shame the world.” “Nobody will be able to say that we did not know. Let it not be said that we did not act.” Ireland also reiterated that settlements in occupied Palestinian territory are illegal under international law and highlighted steps taken to prohibit imports of settlement goods. “It is never too late to uphold international law.” Martin also strongly condemned Russia’s war against Ukraine. “These are not the actions of a country interested in peace.” He accused Russia of intensifying drone and missile attacks on Ukrainian cities and said Moscow could halt the attacks at any moment. “There can be no impunity for war crimes.
