China Warns “Protectionism Produces No Winners” #UNGA

Chinese Vice President Han Zheng used his address to the 81st United Nations General Assembly to call for peace, multilateralism, open trade and a stronger voice for the Global South. “The world wants peace, not war.” Han said the international system centered on the United Nations and the international order based on international law must be upheld. China called for disputes to be resolved through dialogue and consultation and rejected what Han described as a Cold War mentality, bloc confrontation and unilateral military actions that circumvent the UN Security Council. On the Middle East, Han said the sovereignty and security of regional countries should be respected and global trade and supply chains must remain open. China also called for post-conflict reconstruction in Gaza based on the principle of “Palestinians governing Palestine” and reiterated support for a two-state solution. On Ukraine, Han said China would continue playing what it describes as a constructive role in seeking a political settlement. He also called for an immediate end to threats of force, sanctions and the blockade against Cuba. Economic globalization was another major theme. “Protectionism produces no winners.” Han warned that building walls, erecting barriers, decoupling and cutting supply chains ultimately harm all sides. China called for the protection of the WTO-centered multilateral trading system and an open global economy in which economic globalization delivers benefits more broadly. Artificial intelligence also featured prominently. Han called for a people-centered approach to AI and said new technologies should be developed “for good,” while narrowing the digital divide and ensuring their benefits are shared more widely. On global governance, China argued that all countries — regardless of size — should have an equal voice in international affairs. “World affairs should be handled by all through consultation.” Han backed reform of the United Nations but warned that reform should improve the organization’s performance rather than simply cut budgets and mandates.
