European Commission Executive Vice-President Raffaele Fitto said regions must remain at the heart of cohesion policy as Europe adapts to new economic, social and territorial challenges. Fitto said the European Week of Regions and Cities provides an important opportunity to continue dialogue with regional and local authorities. He stressed that cohesion policy now has to respond to new priorities and new emergencies while preserving the role of regions. Fitto pointed to housing as one of the clearest examples. He said more than €3 billion was redirected toward housing under the mid-term review of cohesion policy. Fitto also highlighted water and energy as priorities requiring long-term investment. He said the next Multiannual Financial Framework will continue to recognise the different categories of regions and the principle of cohesion within the new national and regional partnership plans. Fitto acknowledged that regions do not have the same powers in every EU Member State. In some countries, regional authorities have strong constitutional powers and major responsibility for managing programmes, while in others their role is more limited. He said this means the EU must redesign how regions participate in the new structure while still ensuring their strong involvement. “If we want to give the right answer to the new needs that we have in the world, it is important to adapt these traditional policies to the new needs that we have.” Fitto concluded that regions will remain essential to the future of European cohesion policy. #eudebates #RaffaeleFitto #CohesionPolicy #EURegions #Housing
