Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez strongly defended Spain’s migration policy after criticism from several European leaders during the European Council. Sánchez acknowledged differences with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen but drew a distinction between her position and the much sharper criticism coming from the Czech Prime Minister. He argued that the EU’s Pact on Migration and Asylum, agreed under the Spanish Presidency, is already producing results. According to Sánchez, irregular arrivals on the Atlantic route affecting Spain have fallen by around 72% between 2023 and 2026. “And there are the data.” He said Spain is also among the EU countries performing strongly on returns, airport border refusals and compliance with Dublin obligations. Sánchez also highlighted Spain’s implementation of biometric entry and exit controls. “Which country is at the forefront of applying these biometric controls? Spain.” He then dismissed what he described as political rhetoric that does not match the figures. “One thing is the blah blah blah, and another thing is reality.” Sánchez said Spain is pursuing what he described as a responsible policy against irregular migration while also managing legal migration and cooperating with countries of origin and transit. He also defended granting rights to migrants already living in European countries, arguing that recognition of rights helps integrate people into the country where they live. Sánchez confirmed that Spain and Italy are working toward a rapid solution to their dispute over the application of Schengen rules. “I hope we can reach an agreement as soon as possible.” Despite deep disagreements among EU governments, Sánchez stressed that leaders ultimately reached a common position on migration. He also welcomed the European Council’s recognition of Ceuta and Melilla as European land borders in Africa, along with commitments of political, operational and financial support. #eudebates #PedroSanchez #Migration #Spain #Schengen
