What is the difference between a republic and a democracy? James Hankins, Professor of Humanities at the University of Florida, traces the history of these two concepts from ancient Athens to today. For most of Western history, democracy as a form of government was viewed with scepticism. Yet democratic ideals of equality, popular sovereignty and individual autonomy gradually took hold. They were, for instance, deliberately woven into the fabric of the American republic by the founding fathers. Hankins argues that a republican form of government and democratic ideals are not only compatible but dependent on each other. The interview was conducted by Aaron MacLean, host of @SchoolofWarPodcast, CBS News National Security Analyst and Free Press columnist. It was recorded in June 2026 at Engelsberg Ironworks, Sweden, during the seminar On Political Order and the Future of Democracy.
