Descrierea episodului
In “You Do Not Exist: And Why That Might Save You,” Melvin Poh challenges our most fundamental assumption: that the self is a fixed, independent entity at the centre of our lives. Drawing from philosophy, neuroscience, and human relationships, he explores the self as something fluid, relational, and continually shaped by our experiences, inviting us to reconsider what it means to truly exist. Melvin Poh FRSA is a Malaysian public intellectual and author whose work explores how philosophy speaks to modern life. Raised largely between the West and Asia, and educated at Harvard and Cambridge before qualifying as a barrister at Lincoln's Inn, he left an established career in law to devote himself to social entrepreneurship, public philosophy, writing and speaking on the importance and wisdom of philosophical thought for a contemporary audience. He is the author of Disconnected, a reflection on attention, identity, and living well in a hyperconnected age. For over a decade he has worked to make philosophy and knowledge freely accessible beyond the academy, founding Empirics, an open knowledge platform and independent publishing house as well as the Empirical Institute, a public philosophy think tank; he carries a conviction that the world's wisdom should serve the many rather than remain with the few. He was named to the Forbes 30 Under 30 list, received the British Business Innovation Award from the British High Commission Malaysia and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
