This is the second episode of How You Work, a series about disabled people who are exceptional at their jobs and how they actually do them. Kate Stanforth trained in ballet from the age of 2 and became disabled as a teenager. She's now a wheelchair user and has spent over 15 years developing her own way of dancing. She founded the Kate Stanforth Academy of Arts, which teaches ballet to disabled dancers and works with The Royal Ballet School. In this episode I joined Kate for a ballet and tap-dancing class. Where she shows me how she adapts ballet to her wheelchair, how she balances on two wheels, how she moves with her arms and upper body, and what it takes to perform.
